A proactive approach to health involves understanding and managing potential risks. Dr. Richard Boothby provides expert care for a range of conditions, focusing on early detection and effective management to support your long-term wellness. Common areas of focus include:

                • Salpingitis: Preventative care includes understanding the risks of salpingitis, an infection of the fallopian tubes, which can lead to infertility if left untreated; early intervention is key.
                • Rectovaginal Fistula: A rectovaginal fistula is an abnormal connection between the rectum and vagina, and early detection through regular checkups can prevent serious complications like infection and incontinence.
                • Vaginal and Pelvic Prolapse: Maintaining strong pelvic floor muscles through regular exercise significantly reduces your risk of developing vaginal and pelvic prolapse later in life.
                • Gynecologic Cancer: Understanding your family history and personal risk factors for gynecologic cancers empowers you to make informed decisions about preventative screenings and lifestyle choices.
                • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Managing abnormal uterine bleeding early can help minimize disruptions to your daily life and prevent potentially serious health consequences down the line. Regular OB/GYN visits are crucial.
                • Asymptomatic Post-Menopausal Status: Staying healthy after menopause means attending regular appointments for preventive care; early detection of potential problems is key for better health outcomes.
                • Uterine Prolapse: Uterine prolapse is a condition where the uterus slips down into the vagina, and proactive pelvic floor exercises can help prevent or manage this.
                • Menstrual Disorders: Preventive care includes monitoring your menstrual cycle for changes that could indicate problems like endometriosis or PCOS, allowing for early intervention and better management.
                • Trichomoniasis: Regular check-ups with your OB/GYN are crucial for preventing trichomoniasis, as early detection and treatment can safeguard your reproductive health.
                • Genital Warts: Preventing genital warts involves practicing safe sex and getting the HPV vaccine, protecting your reproductive health and preventing long-term complications.
                • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Early detection of a UTI through recognizing symptoms like burning urination and frequent urges is key to preventing serious kidney infections and long-term health issues.
                • Labia Majora Cancer: Regular self-exams and checkups with your OB/GYN are crucial for early detection of labia majora cancer, improving treatment outcomes and your chances of a full recovery.

                • Birth Control: Prevent unwanted pregnancies and experience better menstrual health through a personalized discussion about available birth control methods.
                • Laparoscopic Oophorectomy: A laparoscopic oophorectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove one or both ovaries, sometimes proactively chosen to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer in high-risk individuals.
                • Intrauterine Device (IUD) Placement: Proactively manage your family planning by choosing IUD placement, a convenient and reliable form of contraception that can last for years.
                • Salpingectomy: A salpingectomy is a surgical procedure to remove your fallopian tubes, a proactive step to significantly reduce your risk of ectopic pregnancy and certain types of ovarian cancer.
                • Radical Hysterectomies for Cervical Cancer: For women diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer, a radical hysterectomy is a surgical option to remove the cancerous tissues, aiming to prevent recurrence and enhance long-term health.
                • Excision of Cervix: As part of comprehensive cervical cancer prevention, excision of the cervix removes affected cells, helping to prevent progression to more serious conditions.
                • Gynecologic Cancer Screening: Protecting your future health is easy with proactive gynecologic cancer screenings, which can detect early signs of several types of gynecological cancers.
                • Vaginectomy: While not a preventative measure in itself, a vaginectomy is a surgical procedure that may be necessary to address advanced vaginal diseases or injuries, contributing to overall health.
                • Hysteroscopy: For peace of mind and improved reproductive health, a hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure offering a direct visualization of your uterine cavity, enabling early detection of potential problems.
                • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus, often chosen to proactively manage severe uterine fibroids or endometriosis.
                • Gynecological Oncology Surgery: Protecting your future: this surgery plays a vital role in detecting and removing cancerous or pre-cancerous cells in the cervix, ovaries, uterus, or vagina, giving you the best possible outcome.
                • Gynecologic Surgical Procedure: Taking proactive steps with a gynecologic surgical procedure can help detect and treat conditions early, improving your long-term health.

How often do I need a Pap smear and HPV test?
Guidelines for Pap smears and HPV tests vary based on age and risk factors. Dr. Boothby follows the latest evidence-based recommendations and will create a personalized schedule for you to ensure early detection of any potential cervical changes.
What kind of topics should I bring up during my annual wellness exam?
During your annual wellness exam, feel free to discuss any concerns regarding your menstrual cycle, sexual health, birth control, future pregnancy plans, or changes in breast or pelvic health. We encourage open communication and proactive discussion about any topic you'd like to address. No question is off-limits.
I'm concerned about STIs. What screenings are available?
We understand your concern about STIs. Confidential screenings are available for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis. Dr. Boothby can recommend the appropriate tests based on your individual situation.
What is endometriosis and how is it diagnosed?
Endometriosis is a condition where uterine-like tissue grows outside the uterus, sometimes causing pelvic pain and fertility problems. How do I perform a breast self-exam, and how often should I do it?
The goal of a breast self-exam is breast self-awareness—knowing what's normal for your body. Perform a self-exam monthly to recognize any changes like new lumps or skin changes. It's important to remember that this is a supplement to, not a replacement for, clinical exams by Dr. Boothby and mammograms.
What are my options for birth control?
Dr. Boothby offers a variety of safe and effective birth control options, including hormonal methods like pills and IUDs, and non-hormonal options. The best choice is tailored to individual needs, and we'll discuss your lifestyle, health history, and preferences to find the perfect fit for you.
At what age should I start getting mammograms, and how often?
Recommendations for mammograms generally start at age 40, but can vary based on family history and personal risk factors. Dr. Boothby will assess your individual risk to recommend the most appropriate screening schedule to ensure early detection of breast cancer.
