Here are answers to some common questions about proactive Dermatological care with Dr. Peter Jr:

What is a Dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, and nail conditions. They play a vital role in preventing and treating skin cancer, and managing a wide range of skin diseases.
How often should I get a full-body skin exam?
For average-risk individuals, an annual skin exam is recommended. However, for patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, or with many moles, Dr. Peter Jr. may recommend more frequent screenings for early detection.
What is the best way to prevent skin cancer?
Protecting your skin from the sun is key to preventing skin cancer. Simple habits like daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and wearing protective clothing can significantly reduce your risk. Avoiding tanning beds is also crucial for lifelong skin health.
What is an actinic keratosis (AK)?
Actinic keratosis (AK) is a precancerous skin growth often caused by sun exposure. They frequently appear as rough, sandpaper-like patches. Treating AKs prevents a small percentage from potentially developing into squamous cell carcinoma.
What is a skin biopsy?
A skin biopsy is a simple, quick in-office procedure. Dr. Peter Jr. will numb the area and remove a small sample of skin, which is then sent to a lab for examination under a microscope to provide a definitive diagnosis.
How do you treat chronic conditions like psoriasis or eczema?
Dr. Peter Jr. and our team take a comprehensive approach to managing chronic skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. We tailor treatment plans to each patient, considering factors like the severity and location of the condition. This may include topical medications, moisturizers, light therapy, and, if needed, advanced biologic therapies to target underlying inflammation. Our goal is to minimize flare-ups and improve your overall well-being.
I have acne. Is it something I just have to live with?
Acne is a treatable medical condition, not something you have to live with. Dr. Peter Jr. can create a personalized treatment plan to prevent scarring and improve your skin and confidence, which may include topical creams, oral medications, and procedural options.
I'm experiencing hair loss. Can a dermatologist help?
Yes, dermatologists are experts in hair and scalp disorders (trichology). Dr. Peter Jr. can perform a thorough evaluation to diagnose the specific type of hair loss (alopecia) and recommend effective treatments to prevent further loss and encourage regrowth.
