A proactive approach to health involves understanding and managing potential risks. Dr. Ana Prieto provides expert care for a range of conditions, focusing on early detection and effective management to support your long-term wellness. Common areas of focus include:

      • Hypertension: High blood pressure, or hypertension, can harm your heart and kidneys, so regular checkups help us catch it early and prevent serious problems.
      • Vaginal Yeast Infection: A vaginal yeast infection, or candidiasis, is a common fungal infection easily treated with early detection, preventing discomfort and potential complications.
      • Endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, and early diagnosis through regular checkups can help prevent painful symptoms and potential fertility issues.
      • Gestational Diabetes: Because gestational diabetes can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, proactive management during pregnancy is crucial for your future health.
      • Breech Position: Early identification of a breech presentation during pregnancy allows for interventions like external cephalic version (ECV) or planning for a Cesarean section, potentially preventing complications during delivery.
      • Menopausal and Postmenopausal Disorders: Don't wait for symptoms to worsen; proactive management of menopausal changes through regular health visits and open communication with your doctor ensures you receive the best possible care.
      • Venous Thrombosis and Phlebitis in Pregnancy: Understanding your risk for venous thrombosis and phlebitis during pregnancy allows for proactive steps to minimize the chance of developing these potentially dangerous blood clots.
      • Vaginal and Pelvic Prolapse: Early detection of vaginal and pelvic prolapse is key to managing symptoms and preventing further organ descent and related complications like incontinence or pain.
      • Sexual Disorders: Open communication with your OB/GYN about sexual health concerns allows for early detection and treatment of potential problems, improving your quality of life.
      • Postpartum Depression: Recognizing the risk factors for postpartum depression, such as a history of depression, allows for proactive strategies to manage your mental well-being after delivery.
      • Yeast Infections: Managing yeast infections promptly reduces the risk of spreading the infection and experiencing prolonged discomfort, protecting your overall well-being.
      • Hemorrhage from Placenta Previa: Early detection of placenta previa through prenatal screenings is crucial to preventing serious complications, like significant blood loss, for both mother and baby.

This list highlights some common health concerns and is for informational purposes only. The best way to understand your personal health and create a prevention plan is to schedule a consultation. Accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans are developed based on individual patient evaluations.

Taking proactive steps is central to long-term health. Dr. Ana Prieto offers a range of key preventive screenings and services designed to provide crucial insights into your health and support your well-being:

      • Vaginal Prolapse Surgery: Taking charge of your pelvic health, vaginal prolapse surgery offers a solution to address organ prolapse, relieving discomfort and improving symptoms.
      • Vulvectomy: Taking proactive steps for your health, a vulvectomy may be recommended to remove cancerous or precancerous tissue from the vulva, potentially saving your life.
      • Destruction or Excision of Vaginal Lesions: Taking a proactive approach to vaginal health, this procedure helps detect and treat abnormal growths before they become a larger concern.
      • Pap Smear: A Pap smear is a vital part of preventive care, allowing for the early detection of abnormalities that could potentially lead to cervical cancer.
      • Endometrial Ablation: Endometrial ablation is a procedure designed to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, thereby preventing complications like anemia and improving your daily life.
      • Trichomoniasis Screening: Take a proactive step towards better sexual health with a trichomoniasis screening; early detection of this infection can prevent future fertility problems and other complications.
      • Sexually Transmitted Infections Screening: Regular STI screenings help detect infections early, allowing for prompt treatment and preventing long-term health problems.
      • First Trimester Screening: Ensure your baby's well-being with first trimester screening—a combination of tests that check for potential genetic issues and chromosomal abnormalities during the critical early stages of pregnancy.
      • Vaginosis Screening: Vaginosis screening is a vital part of preventive care, allowing for early detection and treatment of bacterial vaginosis, ensuring your comfort and overall health.
      • Colporrhaphy: As a preventative measure for pelvic organ prolapse, colporrhaphy surgery tightens the vaginal tissues, supporting the uterus, bladder, and rectum.
      • Genetic Screening for Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with knowledge: genetic screening for breast cancer helps determine your inherited risk, guiding personalized strategies for prevention and early detection.
      • Infertility Evaluation: An infertility evaluation helps identify any issues preventing pregnancy, allowing you to proactively address concerns and explore potential solutions.

Here are answers to some common questions about proactive Obstetrics and Gynecology care with Dr. Ana Prieto:

What can I expect during my first visit with Dr. Ana Prieto?
Your first visit with Dr. Prieto is a collaborative partnership-building session. We will review your detailed health history, discuss your health goals and concerns, and create a personalized plan for future screenings. This is a safe and confidential space to ask any questions you may have.
How often do I need a Pap smear and HPV test?
Guidelines for Pap smears and HPV tests vary by age and risk factors, but the goal is early detection of cervical changes. Dr. Prieto follows the latest evidence-based screening recommendations and will create a personalized schedule for you.
What kind of topics should I bring up during my annual wellness exam?
During your annual wellness exam, feel free to discuss topics such as your menstrual cycle, sexual health concerns, contraceptive needs, future pregnancy plans, and any changes in your breast or pelvic health. We encourage open communication and proactive discussion; no question is off-limits.
I'm concerned about STIs. What screenings are available?
We understand your concern about STIs. Confidential screenings are available for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis. Dr. Prieto can recommend appropriate tests based on your individual situation.
Does Dr. Ana Prieto manage high-risk pregnancies?
Dr. Prieto's practice manages high-risk pregnancies, including those complicated by advanced maternal age, multiple gestations, or pre-existing health conditions. We work closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists to provide comprehensive care and ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.
How do I perform a breast self-exam, and how often should I do it?
Breast self-awareness is key—getting to know what's normal for *your* breasts. Monthly self-exams can help you notice any changes, such as new lumps or skin changes. This is important, but it's not a substitute for clinical exams by Dr. Prieto and mammograms.
What's the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional period before menopause, often characterized by irregular periods and early symptoms. Menopause is the point when periods cease for 12 consecutive months. Dr. Prieto provides support and guidance through both stages.
At what age should I start getting mammograms, and how often?
Recommendations for mammograms typically begin at age 40, but individual needs can vary based on family history and personal risk factors. Dr. Prieto will assess your individual risk to recommend the most appropriate screening schedule, ensuring early detection of breast cancer.
